
Lim Chong Eu was a prominent Malaysian politician. His ancestral roots trace back to Xiamen, Fujian, and he was born in Penang in 1911. The eldest son of renowned Penang physician Lim Chwee Leong, he was an alumnus of Penang Free School. In 1937, he received the Queen’s Scholarship and pursued medical studies at the University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom. In 1944, he traveled to China to participate in the war effort against Japanese occupation. After returning to Penang in 1947, he took over the Subeng Dispensary.
Lim entered politics in 1950 and served as the President of the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA). He was also one of the founding leaders of the Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (Gerakan). From 1969 to 1990, he served as the second Chief Minister of Penang, making him the longest-serving leader in the state's history. He is widely recognized as the "Architect of Modern Penang" and was one of the few ethnic Chinese in Malaysia to receive the prestigious title of "Tun". Following his passing in 2010, a highway in George Town was named in his honor.
