Chee Si Teong
Chee Si Teong, also known by his courtesy name Yi Chen, was a merchant of Hokkien descent from Wenshan Village, Haicheng, Fujian. Born in 1860, he was the second son of Penang businessman Chee Wai Teik (also know as Xu qianli). He was active in northern Malaya and operated the Guan Heng Saw Mill in Gurun, Kedah, supplying timber for shipbuilding and construction. Chee Si Teong played a prominent role in Penang’s Chinese community. He served as a director and leader of various organizations, including Cheng Ho Seah, Tong Kheng Siah, Cheng Leong Keong (Jelutong), the Penang Chinese Town Hall, Lam Wah Ee Hospital, and the Hokkien cemeteries in Batu Gantong and Batu Lanchang. In 1923, during discussions to establish the United Hokkien Cemeteries in Penang, he was appointed Honorary Supervisor. Later, in 1931, he became its President. A strong advocate for education, Chee Si Teong was one of the board members of Chung Hwa Confucian School when it was founded in 1923. He maintained a close relationship with Penang shipping magnate Quah Beng Kee. After his passing in 1938, his epitaph was written by Quah Beng Kee.
